"House or Money, Which Do You Prefer?"

If you were to choose, would you rather have a house but has little money, or would you prefer to have plenty of money but has no house?

  • Living from one place to another

When I was 6 years old, my parents were able to build a small house for our family, thanks to my father's income from working abroad. But, when he returned here in the Philippines to pursue his teaching career, we moved out of our tiny house in the province to a rental house in the city. Though my father was a public-school teacher, I know that he could not afford to build a house for us because we could not even afford to pay our monthly rent, which made us transfer from one house to another until I was in college.

Based on this experience, I have then dreamt of having my own house someday. However, when I got married, my husband and I started living together by renting a house. We rented out a house for almost 3 years since we can't afford to buy or build a house of our own yet! Luckily, after 2 years, we were able to purchase a small lot and started building our dream house.

  •      Building the foundation
Since we do not have savings and we rely solely on our monthly salary, the only way in which we could start building our dream house was by taking out salary loans. At first, I thought that 250,000 pesos is more enough to build a tiny house (Well, I only want to have a small space where we could eat and sleep), but my husband insisted that we build a larger house which could live in for years. I ended up agreeing with him, so the inital amount we've loaned out was spent only on the house's foundation. After that, we had to stop the construction because we had to prepare for the coming of our second child. The spread of the coronavirus also confined us in the house, so we had no choice but to continued living in a rental house.
  • From the ground to the top
After a year, we've decided to take out more loans to finish the construction of our house. Our second loan was spent for the flooring, the third is for the walls, and the fourth one was for the slab-- we've actually borrowed from different banks and institutions to fund our dream house. Once our house was built, we borrowed for the fifth time to buy furniture and to paint the interior.  YES! Finally, we were able to live in our new, own home. But, do you know what's painful? My husband and I both ended up having 5,000 pesos monthly net pay-- when combined, we only have 10,000 pesos monthly income.
  • With a house, but has no money
Finally, we have our own house... BUT, we now have to live with a 10,000 pesos monthly budget-- to pay bills, buy food, pay our nanny, and to buy milk, diaper, and different essentials for our three children!

If you have already read my article on "Have I Only Kept My Pay Slip Virgin!", you will see that prior to marriage, I already have difficulty managing my finances, so it is not a surprise that I did not care whether or not we reach our limit. And now we're actually doomed!

  • If I could go back...
God knows how grateful I am to have built a house I can call my own. But recently, I realized that we have actually rushed things and now we have to suffer the consequences. So, if you are currently renting or living with your relatives and you wanted to build or buy your own house, you can consider the following realizations I had:
    1. We should have compared and listed the prices of materials, and considered which fits our budget.
    2. We should have stuck on building a smaller house first (since we initially wanted to stop renting), and then plan for expansion once we have enough savings.
    3. We should have avoided buying new furniture and used our old ones instead.
    4. We should have stopped taking out loans and halted the construction when our deductions took more than half of our gross income.
    5. We should have had a budget to know how much more can we spend.
Since we cannot go back in time to do these things, all we can do now is to find an extra income to cover our monthly expenses. We might not have money now, but as long as my husband and I support and understand each other, we could overcome any obstacle.

I will soon share the side hustles we've done to recover from this great financial burden. For now, let me tell you this-- whatever your choice is, whether you want to have more money or to have your own house, make sure that you are ready to face the consequences of your actions.

"God Provides When We Need It the Most"

I am very sure that everyone, even the non churchgoers have once asked for God's divine intervention with their life's miseries, losses, and desperation, so if you are feeling so down lately, this article is for you to read.

There are many inevitable situations wherein we feel like giving up, especially when we think that we are struggling alone while the people around us doesn't seem to have any problems at all-- I've been there too! But, do you know why, despite the problems I face every single day, I continue to wake up and put a smile on my face with the thought that "everything's going to be alright"? GOD. There are times that I blame Him for giving me problems, but later on, I realize that everything happens for a reason. I've also realized that most of the problems I have now are the consequences of my non calculated decisions in the past.

Through these realizations, I always consider the following thoughts whenever I feel down, defeated, or whenever I think that God is delaying things:

  • The bigger the problems we overcome, the stronger we become.
Robert Kennedy once said, "Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly."

This quote reminds us that we should not envy people who doesn't seem to struggle at all. Why? Because they are living so freely that they might be shocked once they face a difficult situation. It might be more impossible for them to accept defeat and failure because they have never experienced it. On the other hand, since we're used to dealing with different problems, it is easier for us to find solutions to our problems. And if you are facing a seemingly impossible hurdle right now, believe me, one you overcome that, you will come back stronger and better than before.

  • God provides.
Isn't it amazing how the wild plants, trees, and animals survive on their own? Or take into account the families of jobless people who continue to thrive daily without any source of income. Do you think they were able to survive without God's intervention? I guess not. I believe that these families were able to survive through the donations and help from other people. And that is some of the ways in which we could see how God works and how He provides for us.

Now, if you are worried about how to feed your family or how to pay your bills, I urge you to have faith in Him. Yes, have faith in Him, and I assure you that He will provide your needs. But of course, we should not always rely on Him to give us everything, instead, we should also work hard to make these miracles happen.

  • God knows the perfect time.
Earlier, I asked if you have ever desperately asked God for something, and did He give it to you right away or are you still waiting for it to happen?  Whatever the case is, I would like to assure you that God knows the perfect time when He should give us what we need. He could grant our wish right away, or He could give it at the perfect time, and sometimes He would not give us what we are asking for... But believe me, when He says no, He's probably preparing something better for us. So, let us learn to wait patiently, and trust the Almighty God who wish nothing but the best for all of us.

"Mama's No's Best"

As a mother of three, I always wanted to give the best for my children. I want to provide them with whatever food, toys, and things they WANT. However, I realize that sometimes, we should learn to say "NO" to our children's demands, especially if what they're asking for could actually harm them.

Here are some of the things which my children ask for and I had to say "NO":

  1. Chocolate, candies and sweets

My second son once asked me to give him chocolates even though his voice is starting is sound hoarse due to his excessive consumption of sweets. If I hadn't noticed his voice, I would have willingly given him the chocolates to stop him from bugging me since I was busy during that time. I stopped what I was doing and sternly said,

"No anak, because you have already eaten too many chocolates and your voice is already hoarse. I'm afraid you'll have tonsillitis if I give you more."

Just like other children, my son still insisted on having more chocolates, so he started crying when I ignored him. This went on for at least 15 minutes before he finally calmed down and forgot about the chocolates.

    2. Excessive use of gadgets

We are now in a digital era and children as young as 1 year old could easily navigate gadgets such as smartphones and tablets. With the increasing number of educational videos, nursery rhymes, and interactive games which we could access using different apps, it's tempting to simply give our children a gadget and leave them alone so that we could enjoy our own time.

This is a sad reality, but I am one of the guilty parents who resort to using gadgets to "silence" my children and to stop them from bugging me especially if I am busy with several reports which I need to finish.

But, when my children started to manifest eye problems with their dark circles and involuntary blinking, I instantly kept all the gadgets they were used to watch and play games. Yes, blame me for being an irresponsible parent, which I deeply regretted and cried my eyes out for, but this experience taught me to say no to my children's demands.

        3. Too many toys

I understand that toys are important in developing my children's critical thinking, which is also a good way deviate their attention from using gadgets. However, as a parent, I  make sure that the toys I  buy them are of good quality, and not just a collection of objects which would be eventually thrown out or scattered in the house. So more often, I have to think hard and decide carefully before buying toys for my kids, that sometimes I had to say no whenever they point on different toys in the mall.

  • The Lesson
No matter how much we love our children, there are instances when we have to say "No" to their demands and requests, not because we wanted to punish them, but because we know that our response is the best way to keep them away from harm.

Religiously speaking, there are times when we keep bugging God to give us things which we think we really need, and we get mad whenever He does not respond, or we do not get what we were fervently praying for. Just as how we know what's best for our children, we should acknowledge that sometimes God has to say NO to us because He's either keeping us away from harm or He is preparing something better for us.
